Alpacas are members of the camel family, and are native to South America. Their average lifespan is between 15 and 25 years. They are approximately 3 feet at the shoulder, and normally weigh between 100 and 180 pounds. A newborn Alpaca is called a cria, and arrives after an 11 1/2 month pregnancy. The newborn baby will typically weigh between 15 and 19 pounds and begin nursing within 30 minutes of birth. They are an excellent investment with many potential tax benefits!
